Journaling Prompt Generator

Stuck on what to write? Tap for a fresh, thoughtful prompt. Nothing to sign up for. It all runs in your browser.

A journaling prompt is a short question or statement that gives you a starting point to write, so you can get past the blank page. This free generator serves fresh prompts for reflection, gratitude, anxiety, and self-discovery, tap for a new one anytime. Nothing is saved; it all runs in your browser.

Tap the button for a prompt to write about.

How this works

No model writes these and no request leaves your device. The generator ships with a fixed pool of 22 hand-written prompts in a small file that loads with the page. Tapping the button picks one of them at random and prints it. That is the whole mechanism.

Because the pool is fixed and the picker is a plain lookup by position, the same position always returns the same prompt. An automated test checks exactly that, along with the pool never falling below twenty prompts and no prompt ever being blank, so the count published here stays honest.

What the prompts are for

They are written for four ordinary situations rather than one mood, which is why the same button works on a flat day and a difficult one:

  • Reflection: “What is one thing that went well today, and why?”
  • Gratitude: “What are you grateful for right now?”
  • A crowded head: “What is taking up the most space in your mind today?”
  • Self-knowledge: “What did you learn about yourself this week?”

Each one is a question you can answer in a sentence. None of them asks you to write at length, because the point is to get past the blank page rather than to fill it.

What is not kept

There is nowhere on this page to write, so there is nothing to save. The prompt is displayed, then replaced the next time you tap. The page keeps no record of which prompts you have seen, which also means it cannot avoid repeating one.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write about when journaling?

Use a simple prompt: how you feel right now, one thing that happened today, or one thing you are grateful for. A prompt removes the pressure of a blank page.

How long should a daily journal entry be?

As short as a single sentence. Consistency matters far more than length; a one-line entry every day beats a page once a month.

How do I build a journaling habit that sticks?

Start tiny, one or two lines, and attach it to a habit you already do, like your morning coffee or bedtime. Keeping the bar low is what makes it repeatable.
